The school sent out an alert which said: “Dear Parents, We have been made aware of an incident near the school.

“To ensure the safety of students and staff we are not releasing students from school at this time. Kind regards Plantsbrook School.”

Pupils were held back for around 20 to 25 minutes due to the incident but then released in stages.

A spokesman for Plantsbrook School said: “We thought there may be a safety concern in the local community.

“So with police support we took the decision to delay and stagger the students departure to ease congestion in the local area.

“We appreciate the support of all parents and carers.”
