He ends up getting stuck and starts kicking his legs frantically at one point.
Items are sent flying off the shelves in the process.
McMahon went on to swipe around £200 worth of National Lottery scratchcards, crisps, washing detergents and food products before fleeing via a fire exit at the store in Radford, Nottinghamshire, at 6.10am on Friday (February 21).
Police officers arrived within six minutes of getting a 999 call and discovered a a man matching the intruder’s description in nearby Forest Road.
McMahon was arrested, taken into custody and was behind bars within 24 hours of his crime. He pleaded guilty to burglary and was jailed for 22 weeks when he appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, February 22. Sergeant Karl Browne, of the City Central neighbourhood policing team, said: “A rapid response by officers on duty allowed us to catch this burglar red-handed and I’m pleased he has also been dealt with swiftly by the courts. “Commercial burglaries are taken very seriously by the force as we understand the financial impact on businesses and the emotional impact on members of staff. “McMahon thought he could smash his way through the roof of a supermarket and take what he wanted so I’m pleased he has now been handed a spell behind bars.”
