Chelmsley Wood bus fire video as single decker goes up in flames


The NXWM 2220 caught fire at Chelmsley Wood Interchange

This is the dramatic moment fierce flames ripped through a single decker bus in Chelmsley Wood.

The back of the National Express West Midlands number 72 service caught fire outside the bus Interchange in Chelmsley Circle at around 1.45pm yesterday, Tuesday, February 18.

No-one was trapped or injured and passers-by filmed the fire engulfing the bus as thick smoke filled the air.

Security from the shopping centre tried to keep people away before the arrival of firefighters.

A West Midlands Fire Service spokesman said: “At 1.43pm on Tuesday, February 18, we responded to a fire on Chelmsley Circle, Chelmsley Wood.

“Two of our fire engines attended, from Bickenhill and Ward End fire stations, plus a crew from Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service.

“A single-decker bus was well alight next to a shopping centre. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used hose reels to tackle the fire and put measures in place to protect the shopping centre.

“Our crews had left the scene by just after 3pm, when recovery for the vehicle was being arranged and the scene managed by the police.”

Bus firm NX West Midlands said: “There were no injuries and all passengers were swiftly evacuated from the vehicle. West Midlands Fire Service attended the scene and we will of course work with them to carry out a full investigation.

“We apologise to any of our customers whose journeys were delayed as a result of the incident.”
