Coronation Street’s Sue Cleaver has shared a shocking on-set anecdote where she “nearly killed” her fellow cast members Simon Gregson and Craig Charles during filming.

Best known for her role as Eileen Grimshaw, the actress recounted on This Morning how an intense scene got a bit too real.

Discussing her character’s “violent” moments, she recalled a time before stunt doubles were common on the show. She said: “I remember in the early days when you slapped someone – you used to do it.

“Now, you’ve got stunt people in and it’s all magic but we used to do it.

“I remember banging Steve McDonald and Craig [Charles]’s heads together and there was an almighty bang.

“Honestly, I nearly killed them. I got carried away.”

Sue herself wasn’t immune to on-set accidents, ending up in hospital in 2012 after being accidentally struck in the face during a fight scene with Judy Holt’s character, Lesley Kershaw.

The blow knocked her unconscious.

“I did get knocked out. Lesley, who had Alzheimer’s, we had a stunt person there and we set it all up. It was from underneath and we got it wrong. No, she got it wrong.”, reports the Mirror.

“That was me out-cold on the floor. Sent me to hospital. They used the sound for the clip,” she revealed.

Sue has declared her departure from the ITV soap after a remarkable 25-year stint as Eileen, citing a desire for new experiences as she enters her 60th year.

In her statement, she expressed: “The door is still firmly open but as I reached my 60th year, I decided it was time to embrace change, look for new adventures and live fearlessly.”

She also mentioned her deep affection for her time on the series, yet felt the pull to explore different opportunities.

Her on-screen son, Ryan Thomas, will make a comeback for her leaving storyline, having confirmed to The Mirror and other media outlets his return as Jason Grimshaw later in the year.

Ryan shared his thoughts on the matter: “I got the call from Sue saying would I come back for her exit storyline – that’s where my career started and I wouldn’t be where I am now if it wasn’t for Coronation Street,” he remarked.

“That place will always have my respect and I’m very loyal to where I came from. They taught me everything I know, so I’m excited.”
