Unsolved Digbeth ‘brothel murder’ to air on new BBC crime show as police say ‘time is now’

Jinming Zhang was stabbed to death in Digbeth three years ago but the case has gone cold

A Birmingham ‘brothel murder’ will feature on a new BBC crime show tonight in a fresh bid to crack the unsolved case.

The first episode of Forensics: The Real CSI will focus on the murder of Jinming Zhang in Digbeth on February 9, 2022.

The 41-year-old, who allegedly ran a brothel when he was killed, was found fatally stabbed in a Moseley Street flat following a suspected robbery in the area.

Detectives released CCTV footage of a 5ft 5in prime suspect who was seen walking casually away from the area following the killing.

He had a “distinctive walk” – but is yet to be found three years on.

DNA left at the murder scene did not match any samples on the national DNA database, which West Midlands Police said was “unusual.”

Detectives hunting the killer continue to be baffled over the cold case but say “now is the right time” for potential witnesses to come forward with information.

The force’s forensic officers will talk about the unsolved case on the new show airing on BBC Two at 9pm tonight.

Senior Investigating Officer Kay Thompson said: “No case is ever closed and we are ready to follow-up on any new lines of enquiry that come through to us.

“We’re hoping that despite the time that has gone by someone will decide that now is the right time to come forward with what could be vital information.”

Crimestoppers continue to offer a £20,000 cash reward for information.

Anyone with information about the murder should contact police via this public portal.
