Gene Hackman’s wife Betsy Arakawa and the Oscar-winning actor were found dead in their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico earlier this week and police are now looking into the death

Police have reported that evidence found near the body of Betsy Arakawa, wife of Gene Hackman, is “significant” and “of concern”.

The legendary actor Gene, aged 95, and his 65 year old wife Betsy were discovered dead at their Santa Fe, New Mexico residence on Wednesday, February 26.

After emergency services were alerted, officers located the couple deceased in separate rooms.

Near where Betsy’s body was found, positioned next to a heater that may have toppled onto her, authorities have taken particular interest in a bottle of prescription medication found close to the late classical pianist.

Santa Fe Sheriff Adan Mendoza reportedly declared that these pills are “significant evidence” and raise concerns.

He described them as “very important evidence” that has been sent to a medical investigator for examination.

Sheriff Mendoza remarked: “We’re looking at [the pills] specifically, and other medications possibly in the residence”.

During a press conference held on Friday, February 28, he said: “Now, collected from the residence, from this search warrant; there were two green in colour cell phones, two bottles of medication, one bottle of over-the-counter Tylenol, medical records, and a 2025 monthly planner calendar.

“Those items were secured from the residence for evidentiary purposes.”

The sheriff also provided an update on the autopsies performed on the bodies, sharing the preliminary findings.

He stated: “An autopsy was performed. Initial findings noted: no external trauma to either individual, the manner and cause of death has not been determined.

“Official results of the autopsy and toxicology reports are pending. Just today, I spoke to Dr Jarell, the pathologist from the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator – this was at 2pm today.”

He continued: “She advised that were several tests admitted to be expedited. She revealed to me the following information; both individuals tested negative for carbon monoxide.

“An initial interrogation was conducted of Mr Hackman’s pacemaker, this revealed that his last event was recorded on February 17 2025.

“I was advised that a more thorough investigation will be completed. That will conclude my statement, I will take a few questions. Just so everybody knows this is an active investigation still.”

In addition, police have expressed their desire to interview Gene’s three children to help establish his final movements prior to the tragic incident.

It has been confirmed that they are speaking with “family members” as they attempt to reconstruct the final days of Gene and his wife Betsy.
