Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa were found dead at their New Mexico home this week and were reportedly partially mummified when they were discovered

Tragic details have emerged surrounding the deaths of Hollywood legend Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa.

According to an arrest warrant, 64 year old Arakawa’s body showed signs of decomposition, including facial bloating and mummification of her hands and feet.

The warrant, obtained by Mail Online, revealed that Hackman’s body exhibited similar signs of decomposition.

Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed the devastating news of the couple’s deaths, stating that the couple and their dog had passed away just after midnight.

While the investigation is ongoing, authorities do not currently suspect foul play. Two other dogs were found alive at the property.

Some family members have speculated that carbon monoxide poisoning may have contributed to the couple’s deaths, although the investigation is still underway.

The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s office in New Mexico released a statement confirming the “active investigation” into the couple’s deaths.

It read: “We can confirm that both Gene Hackman and his wife were found deceased Wednesday afternoon at their residence on Sunset Trail.

“This is an active investigation – however, at this time we do not believe that foul play was a factor.”

Two maintenance workers, Roland Lowe Begay and Jesse Kesler, were said to have found the bodies, eports the Mirror.

Authorities did not publicly confirm the couple’s identities for nearly 12 hours.

Newly released details about the scene may shed light on why the information was initially withheld.

According to Begay and Kesler, neither of them had seen the pair in approximately two weeks.

Evidence suggests they had been deceased for some time before being found.

Arakawa was located on the bathroom floor, reportedly near an open prescription bottle with pills scattered across the counter.

Officials have yet to specify what type of medication was present or whether it belonged to Arakawa or her husband.

A space heater was positioned close to her head, and investigators are considering whether it may have fallen.

Meanwhile, Hackman’s body was discovered in a mudroom near the kitchen, as detailed in the search warrant.

The Oscar-winning Superman actor was found fully dressed, with his sunglasses lying beside him – a detail that hints he may have collapsed unexpectedly.

Emergency responders, including firefighters, were dispatched to the residence, but no evidence of a gas leak was detected.

Earlier on Thursday, Elizabeth, Hackman’s daughter, raised the possibility that carbon monoxide poisoning might have contributed to the deaths of her father and stepmother.

One of their three dogs, a German Shepherd, was found deceased in a closet near the bathroom, about 10 to 15 feet from Betsy’s body, contradicting initial reports that the dog had died in a kennel.

The couple’s other two dogs were unharmed, with one discovered near Betsy’s remains and the other seen roaming the property.

Investigators observed that the front door was slightly ajar but found no signs of forced entry.

At this stage, the Santa Fe Sheriff’s Department has excluded foul play, although the case is still under investigation.

The 95 year old actor enjoyed a six-decade-long career, earning two Academy Awards, two BAFTA Awards, four Golden Globes, a SAG Award, and the Silver Bear.

He was renowned for his performances in The French Connection, Unforgiven, I Never Sang for My Father, and Bonnie and Clyde.

He won the best actor Oscar in 1972 for his portrayal of Detective Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle in The French Connection and received another Academy Award for best supporting actor for his role in the 1992 Western Unforgiven, directed by Clint Eastwood.

Born in California in 1930, Hackman left home at the tender age of 16 to join the marine corps. He served from 1947 to 1952 as a field radio operator and later as a broadcast journalist.

Following his service, he studied journalism and television production at the University of Illinois, but eventually decided to switch gears and pursue acting.

Before his big break in 1967’s Bonnie And Clyde, alongside Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, Hackman had a handful of TV and theatre roles.

His performance in the film earned him an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor.

In his twilight years, Hackman chose a life away from the limelight, living quietly with his wife Betsy and their cherished German Shepherd dogs.
