The worst of the weather is expected by midday on March 11. The maps suggest as much as 10cm of snow could fall every hour, according to the projections from WX Charts, which are based using Met Desk data.
A Met Office forecast spanning March 1 to March 10 explains: “A split in weather conditions is likely across the country for the start of spring. Northwestern areas will likely see spells of rain and stronger winds as Atlantic weather systems arrive from the west. Spells of wet and windy weather will move southeast to some degree across the country at times.

“However, high pressure is likely to have more influence across the south of the country, at least at first. Here, there should be a good deal of fine/dry weather during early March with a chance of night frosts and morning fog patches.
“Through the course of this period the chance of unsettled conditions becoming more dominant across the country increases. Temperatures generally around average, though with milder interludes likely.”
A March 10 to March 24 forecast adds: “The weather is expected to be changeable across the UK with Atlantic, with frontal systems pushing across the UK from the west at times. These will bring periods of wet and windy weather, with western and northwestern areas likely to see the heaviest rainfall and strongest winds.
“Drier and brighter weather is expected between frontal systems, and likely feeling warm in the sunshine where winds fall light. Temperatures are likely to be above average overall, although some short-lived cooler spells are possible at times.”
