Foreign Office issues ‘don’t travel’ warnings over ‘kidnap’ and ‘armed violence’ threats

The countries which Brits should avoid travelling to have been listed by the Foreign Office.

While many Brits enjoy visiting popular holiday destinations like Spain and Italy, other globetrotters prefer more obscure and far-flung parts of the world.

But it’s important to know if countries are safe to visit before adding them to the list of travel destinations.

It comes after a British couple were detained while travelling in Iran in January, and have now been charged with espionage. It’s among places Brits are not advised to visit.

Many of the countries tourists should steer clear of are either warzones or present security risks to visitors, which could include kidnap or armed violence.

The following countries are among those the Foreign Office says Brits should avoid, according to research from international health insurance experts William Russell.

Iran: All travel to Iran is not advised due to Brits being at risk of arrest.

Yemen: All travel to Yemen is not advised due to unpredicted security conditions.

Sudan: All travel to Sudan should be avoided due to armed conflict, civil unrest, and the volatile security situation.

South Sudan: All travel to Sudan is not advised due to the risk of armed violence and criminality.

Afghanistan: Tourists are not advised to travel to Afghanistan due to the volatile security situation.

Ukraine: Travel to Ukraine is not advised due to the volatile security environment and military conflict.

Democratic Republic of the Congo: Travel to the Democratic Republic of Congo should be avoided due to the fragile security situation, escalating tensions in the region, high crime rates, and civil unrest.

Syria: Tourists have been advised not to travel to Syria due to ongoing conflict and unpredictable security conditions.

Russia: Travelling to Russia is not advised due to risks and threats of military conflict.

Israel: All travel to Israel should be avoided due to the volatile security situation and armed conflict.

Mali: Travel to Mali is not safe for tourists due to the high threat of terrorist attacks and kidnapping.
