‘I’ve been forced to move out of Birmingham and now I live in a caravan because I have a dog’

Homeless Mickey Singh was evicted a week before Christmas and is now searching for a landlord who accepts pets

A dog owner who claims he was unfairly evicted from his Birmingham home is now living in a caravan – 170 miles away from the city. Mickey Singh was made homeless a week before Christmas and has been urgently searching for a new, pet-friendly property ever since.

The 46-year-old, who has an XL Bully and two puppies, claims he was told to move out of his Kingstanding HMO flat in December last year. He says the landlord was unhappy he had a puppy – which was his ex-partner’s – at the property, but he stressed it was only for a weekend.

He believed the issue was sorted after a phone call with his landlord. “Next thing I know I’m being served with an eviction order and I don’t know what to do,” Mickey told BirminghamLive.

“I’ve had to relocate to Kent. I got ripped away from the life and friends I had made in Birmingham, and here, I’m stuck in a world where I don’t know anyone, I can’t go to anyone for help. I just wish I could catch a break.”

Fortunately, thanks to the help of kind-hearted strangers in online XL Bully groups, he was able to move into a caravan for a roof over their heads. However, there is little space, or security, for Mickey and the three dogs – which he likens to his ‘kids’ and ‘family’.

“I managed to get something temporary – thanks to a couple of people who helped me,” he said. “That’s where I’m at now. I’m in a small caravan with all three dogs, and I’m still waiting for someone to help me with the tenancy.

Though grateful for the help he’s received, he said he was still without a tenancy as the documents had not been sorted for the caravan. “I’ve got evicted a week before Christmas, no one’s willing to give me a break,” he reflected.

“I put a post up on an XL bully site and I said ‘please’, I was willing to sleep on the streets or something because giving up on him is not in the equation.

“I don’t know where to turn to or what to do because I’m on borrowed time at the minute. It’s unnerving.” He has been struggling to find a landlord who will house the dogs. However, he stresses it is not down to any prejudice over the XL Bully.

He added: “Just they don’t want dogs, I’m finding it so difficult. Most people get dogs they just keep them stuck in, the dogs are very active and I take them out a lot.

“I’m struggling to find anyone that will accept me and the dogs. They can’t prejudice because he’s an XL Bully because he’s fully legal, it’s just they say it’s because of the dogs.

“I’d take anywhere as long as I’m not in this situation I’m in now. Anywhere in the UK so I can safeguard my babies.” Can you help? You can contact me via email, stephanie.balloo@reachplc.com, if you can assist.
