26 counties in England set to be spared snow ‘over next 72 hours’

The UK faces 72 hours of snow over the next few days – with maps and charts showing a major wintry shift between now and Tuesday. But there are also hopes swathes of the country could be spared any flurries – including Birmingham.

Early maps and charts for the coming days, from WX Charts, which uses Met Desk data, shows Yorkshire and the Humber are predicted to have the worst weather in England with 1cm of snow expected to fall per hour.

As well as Yorkshire, the North West of England seems at risk – and the East too. Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk could all see snow depths reach 3cm, the maps and charts – compiled on Sunday (February 16) – have stipulated.

But it means the West Midlands and East Midlands, (Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Rutland, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire and most of Lincolnshire, West Midlands and Worcestershire ) will escape.

Likewise, Kent, Hampshire, Devon, Cornwall, Dorset, Sussex, Greater London, Oxfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Wiltshire, Berkshire, and Surrey could escape any flurries of the white stuff too.

Looking at the coming week, the Met Office explains: “A cloudy day for many, though some sunny spells in the northwest as well as the southwest initially. Outbreaks of rain across Northern Ireland and showers affecting eastern Scotland, wintry over hills. Breezy and rather cold for most.

“Remaining largely cloudy with outbreaks of rain spreading from Northern Ireland into Scotland and northern England, falling as snow for a time. Staying drier further south. Patches of frost developing.”

Its Monday forecast, for February 17, adds: “Rain in the north easing, but further outbreaks reaching Northern Ireland around dusk. Cloud breaking in the south to allow some sunshine. Windy in the west and north. Rather cold.”

The outlook for Tuesday to Thursday explains: “ Further rain pushing into northern and western regions with some hill snow and possible icy stretches. Drier further south and east with some brighter spells. Often breezy. Slowly turning milder.”
