Brits are being urged to tread carefully on icy surfaces today to avoid “injuries from slips and falls” following a snow flurry across Scotland and parts of northern England, including Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, County Durham, and Cumbria. A yellow weather warning is in place until 2pm, with up to 5cm of the white stuff expected to settle.

The Met Office website warns of potential disruptions: “Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces [are likely]. Some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services. Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths [are likely].”

Travel woes could strike particularly hard across the North York Moors and Northumberland throughout the day. With an easterly wind continuing to lash the country, temperatures could feel as low as -5C in North Yorkshire, while southern counties like Cambridgeshire also brace for bitter conditions.

Despite higher actual air temperatures, the easterlies—most potent along the Lincolnshire coast on the North Sea—will render the chill more piercing.

The forecast on the Met Office site details further: “Outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow are likely to develop early Saturday before easing from the west during the afternoon. Snow is more likely to the east of the Pennines, particularly above 150 metres, where 2-5 cm may accumulate over the North York Moors and Northumberland.”

According to the warning: “To lower levels, any falling snow may struggle to accumulate though some places may see up to 2 cm before gradually easing during the afternoon. There is also a risk of ice over the Pennines, particularly above 200 metres where freezing rain is possible.”

The agency added Brits should take extra care to avoid slips and trips as surfaces will be slippery throughout the day and also on Sunday when temperatures will remain equally cold, particularly in areas such as Cumbria and the Scottish Borders. The freezing conditions have put some of Saturday’s sports fixtures under threat.

As temperatures are set to plummet in areas such as Cumbria, concerns have been raised about the Morecambe vs. Accrington Stanley football match, and the Haydock Park jump meeting in Lancashire is equally uncertain, reported the Mirror.
