Exact dates M54 closed as repairs promise ‘safer and smoother’ journeys

Essential concrete repairs will be carried out on eight ‘full weekends’ from the end of February until April

M54 works are set to take place leading to closures on the Midlands route

Drivers have been warned of eight ‘full weekends’ of travel disruption on a busy motorway amid ‘essential repairs’.

The works are set to take place on the M54 to “ensure smoother and safer journeys” for motorists. It will take place on both sides of the carriageway between J2 and J4 and will begin at the end of February.

National Highways say it will need eight full weekend closures to ensure the repairs can be carried out safely.

The road will also be closed overnight between junctions 2 and 4 on the Thursdays prior to the works to allow traffic management to be put in place. Weekend closures will then run from 8pm on Friday until 6am on Monday.

National Highways, Project manager, Dan Bothwick said, “We have carefully considered the delivery of this scheme and have planned full weekend closures to enable us to carry out our work safely and allow the concrete to set to the required strength.

“Traffic flows are also lower at the weekend and to reduce the impact on drivers we’ll also close the M54 in one direction at a time.

“We have also worked closely with local authorities to minimise disruption on their local roads and some signal timings have been adjusted to allow for the extra traffic.”

Drivers were warned the roadworks will be disruptive as Mr Bothwick thanked motorists for their patience.

He added: “We do appreciate that any roadworks can be disruptive, and we’d like to thank drivers and the local community for their patience while we carry out this essential maintenance.”

During the work fully signed diversion routes will be in place via Castle Farm Way, A5 Watling Street, A449 Stafford Road, and A41 Newport Road.

Work will be carried out between February 27, 2025 to April 21, 2025 with the following closures:
